A study has been taken using a particular model of air purifier (Siesta 7) to test the effects on respiratory allergy sufferers.
Extract from study:
Early in 2004, Daikin Europe N.V. decided to undertake research into the usage and effects of its Siesta 7 air purifier, assigning it to Paris based allergist, Dr Haddad. The research was carried out between June and December 2004 on 69 of the doctor’s patients who were allergic to pollen and indoor allergens or suffered from asthma or rhinitis.

There is some controversy surrounding the claims of certain companies, specifically involving ionic air purifiers. This is partly due to the questionable effects of negative ion generators which many skeptics question the legitimacy of. Additionally the ozone generating properties of these machines are known to have negative side effects, as ozone is toxic.
On the opposite end of the spectrum are air purifiers with HEPA and Hega air filters. The DOE has rigid requirements manufactures must pass to meet HEPA requirements. Consumers should be aware of products that say “HEPA-type.” These have failed to meet HEPA requirements.
