There is some controversy surrounding the claims of certain companies, specifically involving ionic air purifiers. This is partly due to the questionable effects of negative ion generators which many skeptics question the legitimacy of. Additionally the ozone generating properties of these machines are known to have negative side effects, as ozone is toxic.

On the opposite end of the spectrum are air purifiers with HEPA and Hega air filters. The DOE has rigid requirements manufactures must pass to meet HEPA requirements. Consumers should be aware of products that say “HEPA-type.” These have failed to meet HEPA requirements.
