HEPA Air Filters and the Honeywell Air Purifier

AUTHOR: Bret McMathers

Honeywell Air Purifier

Once homes were surrounded by pure natural air, contained few pollutants and kept cool with open windows, but this is no longer the case. Homes have become nearly air-tight to keep from wasting energy for heating and cooling. The air surrounding most homes contains pollutants from car exhaust and allergens like pollen.

Today’s homes contain machinery that can give off damaging fumes, dust, pet dander and even fumes from harsh cleaners. It’s no wonder that more people suffer from allergies and asthma than ever before, and the answer is to use an air purifier of the caliber of the Honeywell air purifier.

The HEPA Filter

Like the Honeywell air purifier, all of the finest air cleansers contain a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. In theory, this kind of filter can remove at least 99.97% of airborne particulates of 0.3 micrometres. This size is significant because it’s the most penetrating particle size. The air filter is even more efficient with particles that are either larger or smaller.

A HEPA filter is made of a mat of fibers arranged in a random fashion that trap particles. It was originally designed in the 1940s and it was used in the Manhattan Project that developed the first hydrogen bomb where it trapped airborne radioactive particles. “HEPA” is not a brand name. It is a rating that can be applied to a filter made by any company as long as it meets the same high standard. The Department of Energy sets the HEPA standards and ensures that all filters that claim to be HEPA meet those standards.

With the aid of the HEPA filter, the Honeywell air purifier is able to keep second-hand cigarette smoke from filling the air of a home with pollutants like carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide. One of the major causes of allergy problems is animal dander. With the help of regular vacuuming, the Honeywell air purifier can go a long way in preventing allergic reactions.

Ordinary objects in the home can release formaldehyde gas into the home’s atmosphere. Objects like carpets, adhesives, upholstery, and particle board can cause fewer breathing problems with the help of a Honeywell air purifier. While it’s impossible for a home to be completely free of dust mites, a Honeywell air purifier can help a great deal. Although it seems as if the number and types of air pollutants increase every year, it’s reassuring to know that technology like the Honeywell air purifier is keeping up.
